Recoil depends on whom you ask everyones idea is a little different . I believe a lot of people prejudge the the 7MM's recoil without ever firing one , only going by what someone else has said . I've owned three of them and was never bothered by the recoil .
Recoil is a relative thing, and their are MANY variables that can come into play.
1. Stock design, How much drop at the heel? Weatherby stocks have little to no drop at the heel to help with recoil. 2. Recoil pad design. 3. Rifle weight. 4. Cartridge loading. Heavier bullets or more powder can obvioulsy be a factor. 5. Noise. Surprisingly the noise can often bother people as much or more than the pounding of the gun. 6. Muzzle brake. 7. Shooter's weight & musculature. A skinny and wirey guy can often handle recoil better that a tubby couch potato. 8. Masochism. Some guys simply LIKE the discomfort of shooting a cannon.
As for a 7 mag, it's about at the top end of a cartridge before I'd say you need to seriously look at corrective measures such as a brake. The MOST important thing is: Will the shooter develop a flinch and hence screw up his accuracy?
IF you buy the 7 mag and start to flinch when shooting it, then the recoil is too much. To combat against it, I'd suggest using a "sissy pad" at the range, and doubling up with ear plugs AND muffs. That way when you're hunting you won't flinch and miss the shot.
i don't think it's bad at all. only person i've ever heard mention it hurt was a little guy (maybe 10 years old, he's related to some of the people who run a range i go to) who wanted to give it a try once. bruised his shoulder, but i put a couple dozen down the pipe without anything.
