I was looking into getting a muzzle loader before I buy another modern firearm. I am interested in the Lyman Deerstalker 50 cal. percussion. It has a 24in barrel and a twist of 1:48. Here is a pic I was wondering other than a rifle what else is required to shoot and maintain a muzzle loader. bullets and lubes and patches and primers. Any and all help is appreciated. I will prolly order it because I can get better deals that way. any help or suggestions on other guns to look at. thanks Will

Biggun check out cabelas and click on muzzle loaders. They have all kinds of starter kits with just about everything you will need . It will also let you compare prices on several different muzzle loaders. With that 1:48 twist you may have some problem shooting the newer type bullets like the power belt and such, but it will shoot the round ball pretty good. My New Englander is a 1:48 twist and I got the best grouping with round ball. Some of the more experienced shooters on here may be able to shed a little more light on the twist and the conicals and the sabots. I always wipe my M/L down with bore butter after cleaning it. It helps keep it from rusting and lets you get more shots before cleaning. Some even say it helps season the barrel ,but I am no metalurgist so I do not really know.
Biggunwill, I don't know where Beach Island is located but, here are the clubs registered with the N.M.L.R.A., National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association:

Contact anyone of these people and I know they will be more than helpful in getting you started correctly. We can offer all types of information, but if you are close to one of them, "hands-on" help can't be beat.
I hope this helps.

Thats a fine looking gun. I own a Thompson Center .50 cal Renegade. The 1:48 twist shoots round balls good and some sabots very well but were very finicky with the bullet size and powder tolerance. It took some experimenting but I found that a 265 grain TC sabot with 90 grains of powder shot great groups at 100 yards. The barrel has been "shot out" now so Im replacing it with a 1:28 inch twist green mountain barrel. I like to shoot those sabots.

Lyman has fine rifles. I shoot their GPR in .50 caliber using the Lee REAL bullet or patched roundball. Powder preference is black...Swiss, Goex or Graf is good. Lubes...crisco, moosemilk, your own, bore-butter...you'll have to play and see what your rifle likes. Here's a couple sites to check out for all your accessories... possibleshop.com/ and crazycrow.com/ Good luck.
