Here's a painless idea to curtail the out of control spending without affecting the working people. I and many of you (not lawyers, of course) have to take and pass a drug test to remain employed. Initiate a drug screening process for people on welfare. It can be politically correct and "Give them a second chance", by allowing them to fail one time. The second failed exam, and they are removed from the welfare rolls.
I brought this very idea up to a newly elected Assemblyman who agreed with the idea.

I like this idea. I've become more of a moderate when it comes to social issues, however, the idea of people using their welfare money to buy drugs absolutely burns me. Although, I also think that the cards that serve as food stamps should specifically reject certain items. My girlfriend and I live in an apartment with very affordable rent, and we both make what I consider a decent amount of money considering our places in life. I see many people at the grocery store with their P.A. Access card buying groceries that I, a working person that has both a day and evening job, consider to be too expensive. Now, people down on their luck shouldn't be restricted to Ramen, but neither should they be buying crab legs and 4 cases of soda along with chips and snack cakes.
As an aside, I've been working in several school districts substitute teaching, as well as with kids in various capacities with a non-profit organization in Pittsburgh. The only time I have been drug tested for a job (and ever) is when I picked up a temp. job at a furniture store for a bit of extra money. I find it interesting that the lowest paying, lowest skilled job that I've ever had since I was in high school was the only one to require a drug test.
"No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session."
I think that it is funny that the PA Access card pays for all the crap - yet does not allow them to buy soap and toilet paper. There was a woman in line in front of me one day in the county market - ( a division of shop n save) that had a bag of dog food on the belt. When the checkout girl told her that she could not buy dog food with food stamps - she got mad and took it back and got a 10 lbs package of ground meat and told the girl - thats ok - my dog likes beef better anyways.
I think that if those people gets caught using drugs, selling drugs or owns those big Rotweilers or Pit Bulls that they shouldn't get food stamps. Nor if they have jacked up pickup trucks, four wheelers, snowmobiles and all the other junk I see in my neighbors yards. Those people are living better then I am!
I am honestly unemployed and I have not worked 2 years in the last 10 because of 3 major auto accidents - yet I pay all my bills on time and I pay my debts in cash and I don't accept a penny of public assistance, SSI or any other government funds.
The few dollars that the insurance company gave me as a settlement 5 years ago is my only source of revenue. When it runs out - it is going to get really rough. But I look for a job 4 hours a day and I spent hundreds of dollars a year in ink and postage stamps and internet to look for work and I don't turn anything down.
I don't do dope - because most employers today requires a drug test for pre employment. Although I wouldn't spend money on dope or do dope anyways because it would cut into my hunting money. 2 months out of the year - I don't work - regardless of the situation - due to the fact that I have hunted every year since I turned 13 and I refuse to give up my hunting to make a couple of dollars. Someday I will be old and crippled and I won't be able to go hunting and all the money in the world will not compensate me for not being able to walk or get around and what good does it do a person to gain the whole world, but loose their immortal soul.
I go to church every week, yet I refuse to hunt on Sundays - even if it was legal. But when I am hunting, that is like my church. It is a very spiritual place where I can be one with god and nature and those experiences that I get today - is worth more to me then all the money in the world.
How many times have you been in the woods on the opening day of deer season and prayed to god that you would get a deer? Not a trophy deer - but just meat for the table to feed you and your family? My opinion is - if you aren't going to eat it - you shouldn't shoot it! You can't eat the horns and that all deer in my opinion are trophy's to me.
