I have read on this post several times that guides are not really necessary for a sucessful hunt for Elk in Co. I am planning a hunt for the 1st rifle season this year and would like some help on where is the best wmu to hunt. Also any help on where to stay and where to hunt would be great even gps cord. if you have them. Also any help on how to hunt them as I am from Pa and have never hunted any deer besides our whitetails. I have hunted for 25 yrs and have a guy in the call industry that can help me with the elk calls but that it about all I have. I do not want to break the bank and was hoping I could go on this hunt for approx $2500. I would like a good chance of getting a bull as this could be my only chance of huntinf Co. Thanks for any help.
I've hunted elk there twice but both time we scouted the area first and made our plans from that . We hunted archery which was pretty liberal as to where you can hunt ,but I'm not so sure thats how thier rifle tags work . I believe they are zoned so you might want to find a area before applying for tags .
First rifle season in Colorado is a draw only hunt. Most units second and third rifle seasons are over the counter. Some more quality units i.e. 76,201,501 etc. are 100% draw only units in all seasons. Your asking if you can go on a DIY hunt in colorado for $2500.00 I'd say you can do better than that. You can get a really good deal on a pack in drop camp and have an outfitter put you in his area and have expense left to spare for tags, gas, and food. Lots of good area's to hunt in the first rifle. Limited tags and not over pressured. I hunt units 80&81. My choice would be first rifle if using a firearm. Archery season can be tricky depending on the weather and pre rut.
I wasn't sure just how the tags system worked today , Thanks for the update. When I was hunting there pretty much everything was over the counter . That was back a few years before I retired .
As far as I know the only place you have to have a guide is the wilderness areas of WY . I've hunted 10 of the western states and never had a guide for any of them . I would have loved to of had one at times just couldn't afford it back in those days .
