How is Florida doing with their Cougars? I've heard that the population is steadily declining, and inbreeding is becoming a problem. Also, does Florida hunt the Cougars (Mountain lion whatever you guys call them) I live in CA where there are A LOT of mountain lions but huning is not allowed "just because." It doesn't make sense because the cougars are destroying bighorn sheep numbers which are endagered, along with making things difficult on Tule Elk & Mule deer, but nothing is being done to keep the cougars populations in check. CA just drives me nuts!! I wonder how much damage they have to cause before the dumb law is changed. Heck, I can't even bring any part of a mountain lion into CA from another state, how dumb is that?
It's so unbeleivable out here. They banned the 50 bmg for no reason at all. No crime has ever been committed with one and they managed to get it banned anyway. I fear that it won't be long before the type of thinking that got the bmg banned will have all guns banned in this miserable state...

We call our cats Panthers down here. From all the sightings that I have just heard of this year alone I would say that the state are just saying they are declining to get more Faderal moneys from the Govt to protect their areas. I will be with Tom today and ask him to answer your question as he will be more than glad to do it. Check back MOnday for the answer to this
Florida's panthers are declining due to habitat loss and traffic deaths. They are not hunted as their numbers are too low to support that. Genetic problems have occured in the captive breeding program- too small a gene pool from which to breed. So they have brought in some new blood from out west.
There has been some limited success in re-introductions of panthers into the everglades but traffic deaths take a toll on newly released cats. They have very large home ranges- especially males. One male panther that was radio collared in the everglades was tracked over a period of months. It moved from south Florida up to central Florida, following the St. Johns River and then turned west towards Tampa before finally returning to the 'glades. This cat had to cross three interstates and numerous of roads in it's journey.
I fear that things will have to get a lot worse for there to be any changes in regulations as far as hunting the cats out west. Everyone is aware of the problems that come from having predatory animals living so close to communities. In Florida, we have a growing problem with 'gators. Every year a few people are killed while swimming or fishing near a big gator- not to mention how many Fido's or FeeFees are taken. As we continue to build housing in these areas the problems are going to increase.
