Just as no one would take a 16 year old kid, who has never drove a car before and give them 15 minutes of instruction and then let them drive in the Coco Cola 600. Neither should a parent take a kid on a quail / pheasant hunt - without first doing some one on one instruction by themselves - out in the woods, away from other people.
Being a adult myself, my opinion is that the parents wanted the kids to experience this type of hunting too soon. Usually involved with someone having too much money and not enough common sense, or someone that has a limited amount of time to hunt and didn't want to really hunt - but wanted to get. So off to the hunting club they went, with pockets full of money and expectations of seeing lot's of game to shoot at.
My own hunting career didn't start until I was 13. My dad knew that I was a excellent outdoors-man - but he didn't want to take me hunting with him - because he was not mature enough to want to give up his hunting to bring someone else into the sport.
No money was invested in my hunting career. Not on boots, not on gloves, not on hunting clothes, not on a gun not even on a orange hat. I was given my grandfathers old .410 bolt action shotgun that was worn out and unsafe to shoot. His old torn brown duck hunting coat and a hand full of shells. I took it upon myself to teach myself how to shoot and how to handle a gun and when to shoot and when not to shoot.
No bird or rabbit is worth someone getting shot over.
Maybe this father should have spent more time instructing his son on gun safety and less time and money on spare weapons and hunting at expensive lodges.
