Howard a maintenance man and good Friend of Mine, 56 years old at the time this accident took place, and strictly a bowhunter, no gun....Went to His cabin on opening day of bowhunting to hunt on His 40 acres of wooded property, but this time His Wife was staying home....Day #1 in the stand, (no safety belt) Howard got dizzy and fell out of His stand which was about 15 feet off the ground...He hit the ground very hard and was completely immobilized....His back was broken in 3 places, as was some ribs and a arm....the worse part is no neighbors were there, and probably couldn't hear Him if they were....The temperature dipped below the freezing mark that night but Howard remained concious but extremely cold....Finally at 4:00 PM the second day, Howard heard a bell ringing (no not St. Peter) it was a bell on the coller of a bird dog, then He started calling out for help.......luckily 2 trespassers that were partridge hunting heard Howard and summoned help....Howard said no more will I ever throw trespassers off My property because if it weren't for them I would have not hung on another night....I had pretty much given up ! Howard took a medical retirement after 3 back operations, and now wears a back brace for life...He also wears a harness, and happy to say is enjoying His bowhunting one again, but You can bet Someone knows exactly what stand He is in..... Magnum
That is sad... I hunted with an older man that taught us the lesson of "stand safety" with his own similar story. He had no belt, no one knew he was there..and he fell, breaking just about every bone you could break. Years of surgery later, he's finally able to hunt again, but with a lot of trouble, because where were bones in his legs and hips, is now metal. He pretty much had to be "rebuilt". And now, he always carries a phone with him and lets everyone know where he's going and when to expect him back.
That is truley, a sad story...but he is very lucky indeed.

That is very sad. A guy that hunts our farm fell out of his stand with out a belt on and broke his back also. In a way, he was lucky in the fact that he was able to craw to my uncles house for help. Glad that your friend is still able to enjoy the outdoors.
That is truly a scary experience. Typically none of my freinds will go where I go. I hike in the swamps or climb steep mountains or go on long canoe trips and almost always go alone. I know it aint good but if I wait for someone to go along with me I'd never go. Age is starting to catch up so maybe I wont be out there by myself so much.
jeniffer123: Really nice post for dog lover and trainer.
