Does anyone have any tips on how to sharpen a knife easily? And what are some good ways to test the sharpness of the blade? When is it sharp for field dressing a deer?
I like using a Oil Stone but their is many sharpening aids out their that have carbon cutting blades to sharpen your knife blade by pulling the blade through it. MKMGOBL bought me one of these last year and it is awesome!
I have a different model and design compared to FHH, but I sharpen and hone the same way. Works real good as you are dressing out your deer, it is handy and practical. I keep it in my pack like all the other "need some day" tools.

I've always been able to keep a good edge on a knife with the small diamond stones..........BUT that sharpener that Mike has is a one pass deal from what I saw, maybe a few passes on a pretty dull blade. I was really impressed with that little thing and plan on getting one for myself.

I recommend the use of a smooth steel type shraper inbetween stone sharping. Very lightly, about 4 passes on each edge side is sufficant. This turns the edge back to its shape position, It gets turned to the side as you use the knife.
