Saw them again today in a field on the other side of the field I saw them in yesterday. There were about 20 birds altogether and I only saw two toms this time. I ended up using my own voice as a hen yelp and called the big one in about 25 yds from the car. Every time I yelped the two toms would fan out. Then I yelped one last time and got a gobble from the big one right in front of me! I never thought I could get a bird to gobble back to my improvised voice yelp but I did today for the first time... it was really cool! Guess I won't have to spend any more money on calls now.

Plan on going to the farm today and get out and check the one side of the road that I'm a little unfamiliar with. I didn't really do much hunting on that side last year and after reviewing an aerial photo of the land I have noticed some clearings and isolated fields in the hardwoods that look like prime strutting areas. I want to check for sign maybe even find a shed or two and get familiar with the lay of the land. We have about a month to go before the opener so my presence in the woods shouldn't disturb the area. I'm not even sure if they are in there yet. I didn't get to scout the land at all last year and during my time in the woods hunting last year I became more familiar with the lay of the land. I plan to check the upper east fields and surrounding woods. Should be some sign. I think I'm going to bring a folding tree saw to cut down some clearings that I think might be some good setup points and maybe make a ground blind or two so it's done and out of the way. More later.

Well, it's 4:20 A.M. today is Saturday, April 2nd and is the annual first morning out scouting trip. TIRED . Gonna have to start getting used to waking up this early. We have to put the clocks ahead for daylight savings time this weekend so will also be losing an hour of sleep. All for the love of the game. Just made some Starbucks coffee and Kristine and I are going to head out in about 20 mins. Weather isn't looking so great today and tomorrow: Periods of rain and wind. Rain becoming heavy at times this afternoon. High 51F. Winds E at 25 to 35 mph. Rainfall may reach two inches. Well, I'm going to stop at CVS on the way there and grab a notebook for additional journal entries. May not even get out of the vehicle at all today. We'll see. More later.

4/2/05 First morning out scouting for the spring.
5:19 Light enough to see. Field on 146 by the train tracks didn't hear anything... alot of noise goin on (train or factory?) in the area. I'm hungry. Lightly raining, expecting heavy rain and wind 10-25 mph.
[glow=red,2,300]5:32[/glow]Heard a few gobbles at about 5:32 left side right across from Midge's over the high ridge. Sounded closer around 300 yds from the road in the woods.
[glow=white,2,300]6:10[/glow]- Saw a longbeard in the cut down corn field by Justin's place. Looked spooked but didn't really look all too bothered.
[glow=blue,2,300]7:00[/glow]- Saw 3 big birds on Rte 146, dead end road, antique car shop? Did not see what they were.
[glow=green,2,300]7:44[/glow]- Saw 5 hens and 3 jakes on the left side crossing over to the Peterson side making their way to the crow field around 8:05.
We have not turned the clocks ahead yet.... tonight we are supposed to for daylight savings time. I want a big Burger King breakfast sandwich and some pancakes. Did not wsee anything over at the horse farm and nothin sown by the gun club.
Hight point of this morning's scout: MIDGE GAVE THE THUMBS UP TO HUNT THE FARM ON 158!!!!

Didn't get to go out this morning. That first 4:00 wake up was a killer, still recovering. Cranky today. The wind is monsterous today and very dreary outside. Warm blankets and the outdoor channel on the agenda for the day. They'll still be out there.

Had a bad 3 day cold front with massive rain for Sat and Sun roll through. Today should be the last of it. Tomorrow is looking better and Wednesday looks like the best day of the week with partly cloudy skies and an expected hi of 68 degrees.
