got to my blind about 9.30am. grunted the stupid spike to the pipeline.fresh scrapes along the edge and looked like they had been just made. put a little something in them to see if he gets excited.it is supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow.i will be there before daylight 'til dark tomorrow.
rained all night.got up and went to the blind in the rain at 6.30am.saw 3 longbeards at 2.00pm feeding on acorns on the edge of the pipeline.no deer.rained ALL day.i took pics of the longbeards, but they were 150 yards away.will see if they came out after i post this.
back at the blind at 6.30am.33 degrees, and not a cloud in the sky.saw 3 does at 9.00 am and the three longbeards at 9.30.decided to go to one of my other stands at 11.00 am.got my rattlin' bag out and started to play with it.deer came flying by at 100 yards and could not tell what it was.grunted a couple of times and settled in.looked to my left and here comes a small buck.he came within 20 yards and i am trying to get my camera out of my pack.took a couple of pics, but they were not any good.i cannot figure out how to get a good pic even with my 4x zoom.he was only a 4pt but very healthy and fat.
hunted the blind from 11.00 am 'til dark.saw the longbeards and first hot doe being chased by a buck.they were about 200 yards away so all i could do was watch.be back tomorrow.today was first day of ML season and the rut begins NOW.
rain, rain rain!i am sick of rain.saw nothing out of the blind but water, got out and walked to the top of the pipeline and saw 4 does spooked across the pasture.got wet and gave it up about 2.00 pm.hope my ML will shoot tomorrow.
took a backstrap from the freezer and grilled it last night and put it in a large ziplock bag.put it in my pack and off to the woods.saw a 12" spike at 7.00 am and a 2" spike came within 10 yards of my groundblind at 10.00 am.fresh scrapes coming down pipeline to blind.it has rained last three days.it is almost time.one more week and it's on!
hunted all day mon/tues/wed with the ML.saw several small bucks and a couple were following does.peak of rut about to hit.today is the first day of rifle still hunting season.can't go 'til about 11.00 am but will be there 'til dark.deer crossing at top of the pipeline about 250 yards away.i set up a small folding stool and forked stick for a rest in case i cannot get a shot from the blind.i had to fire my ML to clear the barrel,so i decided to take out a big fox squirrel for the freezer.he was 30 yards away on a limb looking at me.i held a little below his head and watched him fly off the limb.good hit across the eyes.no meat wasted.
went to the other side of the road and knew my feet would freeze, but i knew the rut was close and there were two good bucks i have not been seeing in the blind.saw five does and a 4-6 point that was hanging around to see if he was needed.big coyote was after a deer while it was too dark to make out whether it was buck or doe.went to blind at 8.30am.buttonhead came out on the pipeline at 9.00 am.i had to leave at 9.30am and when i pulled off in my truck,i took a last look at my blind and a deer was standing in the middle of the pipeline.i grabbed my binocs and it went across the pipeline and another stepped onto it.man,i sure wanted to stay.deer are moving now.got to work sat/sun but will be back each am until 10.00 am.it won't be long before the ladies will be dragging the bigboys out to play
shot a small 5 point for a friend.he needed the meat.saw a 7-8 point that had something wrong with his left front foot,he came within 50 yards of me and i saw a poacher easing around from the direction he came from.i got down and started towards the hunter and he eased back across the fence.i asked him if he lost something.he said no.he asked if i had seen the deer he jumped and i said it had been shot.i asked him why he was on private property and he said he thought he was on public land.i told him where the boundry was and that i was there every day and had the local wardens cell number in my address log in my phone for tresspassers.he apologized and left.
have not hunted during the christmas holidays doing the family thing.went this am 'til 9.30 am.saw a spike, doe and two yearlings at 8.15 am.got down at 9.15 and went to the truck.unloaded my gun and walked onto the road at the pipeline and looked towards my blind.there was a big doe smelling the ground and trailing, then went into the woods.got to go to work.be back tomorrow allday if need be.seeing deer everywhere.it is time! ;)what happened to the grin smiley?
well,i am about worn out from the season.last two years,i have taken a good buck the first week of january within 50 yards of each other.this year, i have not seen a buck that i would shoot.same small bucks, does and yearlings but no real activity since week after christmas.food plots and baiting on adjoining propertiies and public hunting on one side has taken a toll on what used to be great hunting.now, there are tenn walking horses messing with my blind.i think i will be forced to find another place to hunt next year.rifle season last only through next wed, then only ML til the end of jan.i will continue to be out there, but am burned out.i will be glad when mar 15 gets here.
i had been in my ground blind since 7.30 am,and at 4.17 pm a truck came up the road and shot twice.it was not a muzzle loader.the truck came back down the road past mine, turned around and went back and i could here the tailgate close.i called a CO is in my cell phone.within 15 minutes two COS came in from different directions.unfortunately, the scum had gotten to the highway before they could get there.obviously, there were two people and one dropped off to drag the deer off private land onto the road so all they had to do was throw it or them into the truck and go.i had seen a hot doe at 10.00 am chased by a spike and again at 11.00 am.i kept thinking she would pick up another buck before dark, and she may have, but i will never know.
well, deer season is history and for the first time in three years,i did not take a 120 class deer.oh well,i can still glance at the three from previous three years
it is time to watch turkeys getting out in the fields.i saw over 90 within a one mile radius the other afternoon.i counted over 40 gobblers.several people watch them from the road,so it will be hard to hunt them.
