went back to my climber wind blowing like a cyclone.went to walking and found fresh sign beneath red oaks, lots of deer sign.went up ridge and checked a scrape i doctored yesterday.ground torn up size of a truck hood.rubs the size of my thigh. :oi wanted to move my stand but since this sign is within 300 yards of my stand,i think i will try a little trick.i sprayed dominate buck lure in the scrape then on the soles of my boots and walked to the scrape below my stand.i sprayed more buck lure in my scrape and left until tomorrow.
rainey and windy,so i decided to get my climber and bow and take out of the woods since this is the last weekend before gun season.i did not want to come back and find a tree without a stand.down the ridge where bigboy went beserk, the hillside was torn up.this area is remote enough that i don't think anyone will set up on the buck.i will come back in dec during the ML season.when i climbed the tree to get my bow,i decided to see if i would have taken the buck at 25 yards in the scrape.there was a large leaf in the scrape so i drew down on it and turned loose.hit 1" to the left of the leaf!man was my confidence high.
went to west side of the road where the sedge grass hasn't been bushogged in years and made my toyota knock down the briers and weeds for shooting lanes. my ladder stand is hidden in the cedars and many deer have fallen from this stand.this is where i will be before daylight sat am.opening day.i just have to decide whether i use the 300 wby mag,30-06 wby or the bar .270.
man,i sure wish sat would hurry up and get here!i found a scrape that is the biggest i ever saw,so i have my climber and bow and headed out now.i had hung my bow for the year since gun season opens sat,but i can't stand to think someone might kill this guy with a gun and i never get to see him.
well,i watched that scrape until 9.55am and i heard what sounded like a squirrel in the leaves behind me.i eased my head around and it is a 14-16" buck making his way through the thicket.the rattling and grunting had made him steer clear of the scrape.i grunted softly and he looked right at my direction but kept going in the direction he was headed.he disappeared and here is another buck following close behind.he looked to be a six about 14-15" wide and he stopped only at a grunt then continued on his way.i got down and found their trail going into a thicket and rubs and scrapes were everywhere.i came back at 1.30pm and hunted 'til dark but it was obvious they were going out in another direction.i will hang up the bow 'til next year.
going to pick a skinning rack my son made for me today.hope i get to use it tomorrow.now i have to decide on which rifle i will use.i hunt mostly on a narrow pipeline and shots can be from 10' to 400 yards.all three rifles will go the distance,so it really is just presonal preference.
opening day!took my 300wby mag.saw 5 does and two bucks.spike and 8-10 pointer.young gobbler roosted behind me and gobbled at 6.30am at crows.came out on the pipeline at 7.00am and gobbled again.stood in one spot for 15 minutes listening for other birds.left to take wife to work.came back and hunted groundblind across the road 'til dark.did not see anything but squirrels.
went back to stand i hunted opening day.saw big doe at 8.35am.nothing else rest of the day.clutch master cylinder going out,got to fix it tomorrow.rained ALL day and 100% tomorrow.sure was glad to be in my DRY groundblind.
could not sleep.got up at 2.30am,made coffee and got on the computer.raining like cats and dogs.got to fix my truck and get in the woods.finally, daylight and it is pouring down.got my poncho, opened the hood and replaced the clutch master cylinder.started to the woods.got two miles and no clutch.double clutched to the house and it is raining like a monsoon.did the trick again and went to the woods.called a mechanic and he said replace the slave cylinder[which i had] at 1.00pm i left the blind and got a plastic bag and climbed under the truck and replaced the slave cylinder.decided i better stay with the problem until i got it fixed so tomorrow would not be a bust.got home and friend came over to pick up a deer i had in the freezer from last year.he helped me bleed the lines and everything seems to be ok.i will know at 5.30am tomorrow.
same problem!no clutch.pulled back in the driveway and raised the hood.bled the cylinder again.went to the blind.had the stupid clutch on my mind all day.no deer.went to the road, drcided to adjust the master cylinder threaded rod the other way, what have i got to lose?EURECKA!that is what was wrong all along.now the cold front is beginning to move in.wind out of the north at 15-25 mph.went across road and climbed in my ladder.no deer. supposed to be 36 in the am.maybe i can hunt now that the stupid truck works.
my son called and wanted me to bring his mom and come down for thanksgiving dinner and to hunt with him for the day.being "loner" i hated to leave my spot but,i am not seeing anything anyway.we will go.happy thanksgiving everyone, and good luck!
had to work sat/sun 1.00pm 'til 11.00pm.just cannot seem to get motivated to get up at 5.00 am ,hunt 'til 10.00 and have to get home and get ready for work.if i pull the trigger on a buck, then i won't have time to dress and put up before work.weather is great!rain finally stopped friday and it is 36 degrees this am.ML SEASON STARTS NEXT THURSDAY,so this means the rut is a couple of weeks off.my time of year!that is when the BIG BOYS come out to play.
