Well yesterday was opening day of Squirrel season. Momma LH and I went to the swamp on our club to try our luck, I gave Momma LH first shot at the Squirrel's with the 22 with me backing her with my wing master. Momma LH didn't connect but she skint the hair and hide off a couple.
I took my limit of 8 ( four were female and four were male's all were older squirrel's) and we hunted about 30 minute's longer with her missing a couple more and her deciding to give them a try on another day. It was hard hunting with the leave's on the tree's, we found them cutting Hickory nut's and a few in pin oak's.
We didn't see or hear any fox Squirrel's which are pretty common in these wood's.
Post by LouisianaHunter on Oct 17, 2003 21:12:22 GMT -5
Well we haven't been back to the wood's squirrel hunting, working to many hour's.
Momma LH and I went to Illinois to get a yellow lab puppy from gimphunter. We left about 2:00pm Thursday and got to just south of Cairo and spent the night. Friday morning we got to gimphunter's around 9:00am and met him and his wife, these are two great people to visit with. Man what a great looking puppy we can hardly wait to start training her.
On the way home we saw a rice field that had about 1000 Mallard's on it and in the Air. Man what a sight to see. I haven't seen this many Duck's in the last two or three year's.
Taking my stepson Deer hunting in the morning, it's the first day of two for the youth to try their luck before the big boy's get out there and scare them to bad.
Post by LouisianaHunter on Oct 19, 2003 20:45:33 GMT -5
Well I took my stepson who is 13 and never had anyone to teach him to hunt on the second day of our youth hunt. We didn't see a thing this morning, the temp was a cool 48 deg's man it was nice out. Well we went back this evening and it was about 75 deg's kind of warm after such a cool morning and at 6:00pm we had a large doe and her yearling come out on the road and I stopped her by mouth grunting at her and she stood broad sided to us at about 100 yard's. She stood there looking at her yearling and back toward us as I mouth grunted several time's to keep her in the road for about 3 to 4 minutes. Zach just could not find her in the scope for a shot. He was really disappointed in not getting a shot but I told him that was why it's called hunting and not killing. He shook his fish at her flag as she ran off and said next time ol gal....lol
Momma LH said he was just saving her for her to harvest...lol
2 more week's and I have 5 week's vacation, man I can hardly wait for it.
Next Sat. is opening day for muzzleloader season, I took a young doe last year with my TC 209x50 Encore and I want a bigger deer this year with it.
Post by LouisianaHunter on Oct 26, 2003 16:03:49 GMT -5
Well I worked 11-7 friday night, after I got off I got home took a quick bath and the Momma LH and went to camp for opening day of Muzzleloader season. We hunted till 11:00 without seeing anything but a few woodies and a redtail hawk. As I was getting out of the box stand I saw a BIG black snake half way up the ladder heading for the box where we were setting. It was a chicken snake but with Momma LH in the stand with me you would have thought it was an anaconda...lol
I got down and got my machete off my fourwheeler and whacked him in the head so she could/would get out the stand of course there wasn't any way to see a deer around the stand now after all the HE'S GETTING CLOSER, YOU HAD BETTER DO SOMETHING ....LIKE RIGHT NOW....LOL
After I killed it I threw it out in the road, just about this time one of my cousin's came by on his fourwheeler and he stopped to BS about the morning hunt, I pointed to the snake and I wish I had a camera to have got the picture of him flat butting about 3 feet into the air... I forgot he was scared of snake's(yeah right), as his butt hit the fourwheeler he was gone in a puff of dust...lmao
I then picked him up and carried him about a mile down the road to another cousins stand and left him a present at the foot of it.... I wish I could be there to see this one's face also...lol
We went back later in the evening and sat for about an hour till the lightening and rain ran us to a drier safer place, like the trailer.
Post by LouisianaHunter on Oct 29, 2003 5:11:16 GMT -5
Well today Momma LH and went to the gun shop and had my scope (var X 111 3.5x10x50) mounted on my TC 280 barrel, and left her 260 to have the trigger worked worked on (from 51/2 lb pull to 3 lbs pull), this should help her in making long shot's, because she was pulling off target because of the stiff trigger pull. We are going to camp in a little bit to muzzleloader hunt and sight in the new scope for saturday's gun opener. 4 more day's and counting till 5 week's vacation. ;D
Post by LouisianaHunter on Nov 3, 2003 14:09:23 GMT -5
Well the first two day's of season have come and gone. The first day Momma LH sat in her box stand and I sat in my tripod we hunted till 11:00 without seeing a thing. I was foggie till around 9:00 then it got hot and sunny. I had to work 3-11 so we left camp around 12:00, last day before 5 week's vacation, I can hardly wait....lol
The Second day was the same, fog till around 9:00 and then it lifted and got hot quick. Around 9:15 an 8 inch spike crossed my walkin lane, he fed on corn I had scatered on my way in, after he ate his fill he went about 25 yard's and laied down under some pine tree's. I waited till 9:45 to get out of the tripod and I walked right by him to the 4 wheeler and he was still there as I drove off. On our club we don't shoot spike's because they are next year's forked horn's.
Stayed home today so I could go buy sewer pipe, electrical pipe, and plywood for the trailer floor and paneling for the wall's. We are fixing an old house trailer for a camp.
I never thought I would say this this but it's just to hot to try and deer hunt. Where is our COLD weather?..lol
Post by LouisianaHunter on Nov 6, 2003 22:34:34 GMT -5
Well Momma LH is getting a head start on most of us, she has a cold from hell. She's had shot's and 4 different med's, it's a slow go with her.
But on a good note a buddy and I got my septic tank in the ground and I have the trailer about half plumbed, so I took this evening off and went to my tripod for a two hour hunt. About 4:30 a button buck came running right by my stand, the wind was blowing straight out of the northwest and at about 15 to 20 mile's an hour, any way when he got down wind he liked to have turned inside out, he stood there looking but not sure where the human smell was coming from. I thought the way he ran in that something was after him, but if it was it never came out.
The temp had dropped about 15 deg's while I was in the stand, I hope this mean's COLD or COOLER weather is on the way finally.
Post by LouisianaHunter on Nov 11, 2003 8:51:04 GMT -5
Well after hunting for a week now and seeing nothing but doe's, yearling's, and spike's our doe day's rolled around and I didn't see a thing till late sunday evening and as I got into my tripod a doe down wind started to run across the clear cut that is about head high, I had my hands full and had to drop everything and grabbed my gun for a quick shot, saddly I must say I missed the 200 yard shot at a running jumping deer. I looked for her for over an hour to make sure of a hit or not. I admit I didn't think the clear cut had grown up as thick with briars as it has, man talk about tuff to get around in.
Well today in Momma LH and mine 3rd anniversary and I asked what she would like to do to celebrate it, and she informed me we are headed to camp because she want's a buck...lol
Post by LouisianaHunter on Nov 18, 2003 20:24:36 GMT -5
Well Momma LH didn't get her anniversary wish, she hasn't seen a buck yet. I did see another spike this weekend, it had about 1 inch horn's and at the same time I had about 20 quail feeding almost under my stand.
We duck hunted our opening day and ended up with two teal, we hunted a refuge and the sky buster's were out in force.
While I deer hunted monday morning I found a beaver pond loaded with woodie's, so Momma LH and I were going to try them this morning but it started to rain last night and we got almost 3 inch's and the swamp is flooded, so we have to wait till some of the water run's off before we try them.
We are headed to camp tomorrow evening and not coming home till late sunday night to repack and head for Indiana for thanksgiving week. I was told I have premission to hunt land around my sister-in-law's where she has seen two buck's. Oh well I have been on one of these in-law hunt's before and it wasn't fun that's for sure. Maybe this one will end up different. I hope to meet Gobblestopper while we are in the neighborhood. Got my finger's crossed on both account's...lol
Post by LouisianaHunter on Nov 28, 2003 12:53:07 GMT -5
OK Momma LH and I went to Indiana this last week for hunting and In-Lawing.
We went to the DNR last year and talked to one of the Game Warden's and he spent several hour's just talking and looking over the map's of the land we wanted to hunt. He even told us where he had seen a nice buck just day's before, after leaving the DNR office we went to the land and looked it over and made plan's for this year's hunt.
Well needless to say the wind wouldn't corporate with the lay of the land but we tried it any way. The deer didn't move till the middle of the day and as we were setting in our blind I saw a deer move across a slew we were set up next to. Just after I saw this one move Momma LH saw another deer running through the woods toward the first one, I told her get ready because with it running a buck may be close behind her, but no such luck. I guess she was feeling the cooler weather and was just having fun but she ran the other deer off before we could tell what it was.
Shortly after the deer left Momma LH saw movement on our side of the slew and it was a big bodied deer but he had average horn's (nice 6 or a small 8 point), the timber was just thick enough to make seeing him hard to do, so I got out the blind and moved about 25 yards closer to him and took a prop on a tree and squeezed of a shot thinking I would see him fall of kick from a hit, but I saw a limb move and thought I had hit it and missed because if it. Well I moved about 10 to 15 step's closer to him and from a little different angle I shot again with the same result's(limb's moving but this time I could tell they were over his back).
Well I took about 5 more step's and from a different angle I shot again and this time I saw the limbs shake about a foot over his back and now I know what's happening, it's not me missing but the scope is off. Well needless to say Bonehead stunt #2, I was out of shell's, so I had Momma LH to get out of the blind and bring me more, as she got to me the deer ran.
Well needless to say I was bummed out about the misses so we went to a gun store that has an indoor gun range to reset the scope. It was shooting about 6 inch's high and about 4 to 5 inch's to the left at 25 yards, and after about 3 shot's I had it hitting about 1/2 inch low and dead on at 25 yard's. We went back and hunted two more day's and we saw deer but nothing close enough to shoot, I guess they had heard I had it dialed back in...lol
The moral of this story is don't put your scoped gun's in a gun rack on a 4wheeler(quad to some....lol)because the vibration work's havick on the scope's, also I didn't check the gun before going to the woods after traveling 750 mile's to hunt (dumbbutt mistake #3) So this is the REAL STORY....lol
But we'll be back next year ready to give it another try.

Well this is the story's and Picture's of MommaLH and My Spring Turkey Hunting Success.
Opening Day Evening Of Louisiana Season
I got off work at 2:00pm Saturday and broke all speed limit's ( I hope no Copper's read this ) to get to the woods. We set up about 100 yards into the woods the first time, I called just a little bit and very softly on my Kaiser Glass/Slate call with the striker Risher gave me, we set there for about 30 minutes with no luck so we moved about 300 yards and set up again. We had been in this spot for about 45 minutes with me calling sparingly on the glass side of the call when all of a sudden we heard a loud crash in the woods, I thought it was on MommaLH's side and she thought it was on mine. I hit the call just a couple of more time's and then I saw them, two of the prettiest Turkey's slipping toward us. One was the sentry and the biggest of the two was the strutter, you could here him spit and drum all the way in. They got about 50 to 55 yards and hung up, after about 5 minutes the sentry decided something wasn't quite right and turned to leave. At this time MommaLH moved around the tree so she could see the strutter better, I hit the glass just a couple of lick's and he came running back in and the strutter stopped him. I asked MommaLH if she could see the Turkey on the left because he was the better one of the two. She thought I said shoot the one on the left. Well needless to say MommaLH has now had a shot at a real live Turkey and missed him. He was about 50 to 55 yards. MommaLH was so pumped up after the shot and all I could do was smile at her. Then after I told her the distance to him she like to have died. But it was an honest mistake of miss hearing what I said in the EXCITEMENT of the moment. So MommaLH is now a seasoned Turkey Hunter and ready for the next shot, so ya'll be nice to her and don't get on to her about trying the long shot because she was relying on me to tell when to shoot and she miss understood me.
Our 6 Day Hunt In Texas, Opening Week 4/3/04
Day one we heard 4 or 5 birds. They stayed henned up until about 9:00 am and then Shane was able to pull in some birds. With MommaLH getting first shot as agreed upon, LH could see MommaLH's turkey strutting behind a brier thicket at about 15 yards. MommaLH had to shift and use LH's right knee to prop on, but she couldn't find the bird in the scope, as he stepped back behind the briers, Shane called and he stuck his head up, and MommaLH was able to get it into the scope and pull the trigger and dropped it, and at the shot a second unseen bird sprung into the air, and landed about 20 yards and LH dropped him. A double on our opening morning. MommaLH's had about a 5 inch beard, and weighed 16 lbs and LH's was about 5 1/2 inch beard and 18 lbs.
Day two the morning hunt the turkey's were henned up, and would not work. Moved locations for the evening hunt, and as we drove up to our afternoon spot. First thing we saw was two hens in a field, so MommaLH and LH set up and Shane hung back and done the calling. On the first call gobblers went to raising heck everywhere. We seen 3 longbeards and 1 hen, and as Shane was working them 5 jakes came within 15 yards of where we was set up, and went to feeding and dusting to where we couldn't move to set up on the longbeards. The longbeards hung out of range at about 70-80 yards. We had two more hens and a longbeard come in from behind us, but the jakes still had us penned to where we couldn't do anything. So day two ended with no shots.
Day three Shane set up on the opposite end of the property from MommaLH and LH. Shane shot a limbhanger at about 7:30 am, one spur was 1 7/16 inches, the other one was 1 1/16 inch, the beard was 10 1/4 inches and the bird weighed 22 lbs. Then LH shot a jake, that weighed 19 lbs at about 7:35 am. Then LH told MommaLH that they were going to leave at 10:30 am to go and clean birds and go get something to eat. MommaLH told him that Shane and him could go and get something to eat and just bring her something back. She was going to get her a bird. MommaLH called in her first longbeard. It weighed 24 lbs, it's spurs were 7/8 inch long and it's beard was 10 1/4 inches long. LH & Shane were just getting ready to go get something to eat and they heard a shot, so they came to see if MommaLH got her a bird.
Day four we were all set up in the same section of property. At 7:35 am LH shot a longbeard that had 10 1/2 inch beard, 3/4 inch spurs, and he weighed 22 lbs. Then at 8:05 am LH shot another longbeard that weighed 23 lbs, had a 1 inch spur and the other one was broke at a 1/2 inch spur, and it had a 9 inch beard. At about 3:00 pm Shane shot another limbhanger, it weighed 23 lbs, it had a 10 9/16 inch beard, and one spur was 1 3/16 inches and the other was 1 1/8 inches. After Shane got his bird we all went to the woods to see if MommaLH could get her another bird. With help from LH's son Shane, with about an hours worth of calling, we had turkey's everywhere. MommaLH was finally able to get a shot on her second longbeard. It had 8 1/4 inch beard, 3/4 inch spurs, and it weighed 22 lbs.
Day five LH's son Shane slept in till about 9:30 am. The turkey's were all henned up and as we came out of the woods Shane came to see if he could help, but no dice. The turkey's we still all henned up.
We are heading out for one more hunt in the morning, to try to tag MommaLH out. LH is already tagged out.
Well on the sixth morning we set MommaLH up and I was going to try and film and Shane was doing the calling. At about 7:00 we had two Jake's come in silent and at about 10 yard's I couldn't start the cameria because it makes a beep as it start's to tape. MommaLH had one on one side at about 6 yards and on the other side one about 10 step's away, she couldn't see a beard on either one so she let them walk. Well our Texas hunt was then over, now for the 6 hour drive home, which was done with a truck full of Turkey's and story's retold during the drive home.
Our Last Hunt Of Louisiana's Spring Turkey Season 4/16/04
Well at 7:50am this morning I had the pleasure of calling in MommaLH's first Eastern.
I know I'm not a writer so be pantient please and bear with me.
We had set up once just at daylight and after it got light enough to see and hearing no Gobble's, I asked if she really wanted to get her Eastern because it meant a Heck of a walk, and she said ok let's do it. So we walked through water for about 20 minutes and we came out a a small ridge I knew about with beach and pin oak's on it. As MommaLH found her a tree to set beside I set up the decoy, after this was done I lit her a cigarette and told her when she got through with it now it's time. Well I had only hit my slate twice and he cut me off, he was only about 75 yard's from us. I waited just for a moment or so and I told her to get ready because he was coming fast. I had just placed the striker on the call for the third time when I saw him coming through the brush. I told her there he is and she said she could see him and made the correction's in her aiming point as he moved and strutted to us. I whispered to her remember closer is better, I told her this six or seven time's before he got to 20 yard's in full strut, I whispered to her I was going to make him raise his head so be ready for the shot when he presented it. I putted with my mouth and he came out of strut to half strut and so I spit and drummed at him and he came out of full strut and posed where even a blind man/woman could hit him.
Well at the shot history was made again on Caney Hunting Club, by the Calhoun's. I got the first Turkey in the history of the club last year and now I had called the first Woman killed Turkey on the club (my wife's). Now this was a shot heard around the world in the MEN'S world on Caney Hunting Club.
Men are crying in their beer's as we speak...LOL serve's those sucker right...LMBO
He weighed 24 1/2 lb's, 9 1/4 inch beard and 1 1/8 inch spur's (both of them were same).
The picture's they were witnessed by the Tax man's wife and helper.
Now MommLH has two toward her slam, her Rio and her Eastern.
My hat is off to this lady because her back has given her fit's all week but she wanted this bird as bad as it could get so she took aspirn instead of her pain med's to acheve her goal, and yes she got all four of her Turkey's this year with my TC, with no shot's over 30 yard's, three were within 20 yard's and one at 30 yard's. Well there was that missed shot the first day of the season but that's another story.... ;D
Now I have a bill with the tax man for a Rio and an Eastern in full strut, anyone want to help with the bill?..... LMBO
MommaLH and Wish each and everyone a Dream Season Also
Post by LouisianaHunter on Aug 9, 2004 12:31:11 GMT -5
Well MommaLH and I went back to Texas for a weekend with Shane and Earl (Shane's B-I-L) southwest of San Angelo. We saw quite a few doe's and Turkey's on Earl's lease. It seem's they had a very good hatch this year.
We did a little varmit calling Saturday night, Shane called in two bobcat's, one wouldn't come past 150 yard's and at night was a iffy shot so we past it up, and the other one was point blank 15 to 20 yard's. You see him as long as he had his eye's open but when he closed them he just seem to vanish, which he did after a few minute's. We had two other critter's at about 150 yard's but we couldn't tell what they were, so we just watched them disapear into the brush.
We did end up with three ringtail cat's. The two Shane got with the 12 ga was messed up to much to mount, and the one I shot with my 280, well let me just say all I brought home was the tail...lol
If nothing happen's we are going back to try our hand's at dove hunting the last of sept. then back to deer hunt the third week of the season.
Post by LouisianaHunter on Oct 4, 2004 13:30:08 GMT -5
Well Oct. 2nd was our Squirrel Season Opener. MommaLH and I gave them a try even though is was very dry at camp, the leave's were like walking on corn flakes.
Well our Squirrel season finally opened Saturday Oct. 2nd, It was 65 deg. at day break but warmed up really quick with daylight with the high's of the day hitting 85 deg. Unlike the rest of the country we haven't had any rain in almost 70 day's and the wood's are as dry as I have seen them in year's, the leave's were like walking on corn flake's, MommaLH was hunting with me so it was hard to say the least for two of us to try and slip up on them tree rat's. MommaLH ended up with her first two Squirrel's ever and I got the shot's at the one's she scared to death, I ended up with 6 on opening morning, they were all cat squirrel's. It was hot when we left the wood's and as we rode the 4wheeler out I saw a snake in the road ditch and I let MommaLH kill it, just a chicken snake but one that eat's the quail and Turkey egg's so it was a good kill.
We had our work out saturday and MommaLH's back was giving her fit's Sunday morning and I got to hunt one on one with them wiley tree rat's, I ended up with 9, 8 cat squirrel's and one fox squirrel (ok so I lost count).
This first picture you can tell how hot it was because I'm still sweating my butt off in this picture.
This is a picture of MommaLH and her Mountain Cur Bandit(which is a camera hog, she didn't get to go on the hunt but break out a camera and the fourwheeler and there she is), these are MommaLH's first ever squirrel's, and you can tell MommaLH was hot because she took her long sleeve shirt off before we left the wood's.(you can tell MommaLH is a little PO'ED, because she didn't have any makeup on and I made her take a picture.
With sightly cooler temp's Sunday morning this is the result's with me hunting alone one on one with the tree rat's.
We also got MommaLH's Eastern and my Rio back from the Tax Man. My Rio was done as a Breast Mount and MommaLH's was Full Strut. Her Rio should be back shortly. That's two toward's our Slam's.
Thank's Andy for making such Great Call's, if not for you then these wouldn't be possible.
