I just drew the A-31 either sex tag which is archery only for most of LA County. The A-31 zone includes the Angeles Natl Forest but not the Los Padres Natl Forest. Are there any LA bow hunters interested in a bow hunt from Oct-24 to Dec-25? I has anybody hunted for deer and bear(the Angeles Natl Forest has some big bears up to 600lps) in the Angeles Natl Forest or similar Chapparell areas? If anyones interested in a hunt please PM me. Any advice would be appreciated especialy scent control in hot weather.
i hunted las padres national forest for blacktails, i hunted in la panza very good bowhunting, but theres hella lot of idiots driving around in atvs with there bow straped there atv. i know about the heat i would hunt out of a blind ambushing a water hole, flys everywhere and i would drink almost all my water within 2 hours!! i had to conserve alot. my father and i would take the sent free showers ware regualr clothing until we parked where we were gonna hunt, then we would dress in our sent free camo, i would spray down with the sent free spry every 30 minutes or so, it worked to get the flys away for a while. you got be a hard core bowhunter to endure the 104 degree heat just to get a shot at a forkie. then see a bunch of does drinking at your ambushing spot no further than 20 yards and they have no idea your there, beleive me i had my mind driving me crazy to draw and release an arrow at one of those does!! beleive me buddy i would be out there in a heart beat with you, if i still lived in cali. when does your season start??? are the bucks all velveted out?? or they loosing there velvet? keep me posted i hope you can harvest a deer or nice buck form cali with your bow. i have 3 pins on my bow 20, 40, 60. if you dont have a 60 yarder my advice is to get one! and shoot the 60 as much as you can, i had a friend who had the same pins as me but he had 1 more and it was set at 80. good luck shoot staight and ofen! Bran
When stalking and drawing on a buck, my heart beats faster than if I was to run 10 miles non stop!
Hi Bran! I didn't know that there were black tail in the Los Padres has the Los Padres to the best of my knowledge includes Santa Barbara Ventura and LA counties so it would be a bit south of the black-tail range but maybe I am wrong. Fortunatly I have an either sex tag and the special season starts ) Oct-24 thru Dec-25 so it shouldn't be that hot plus its a t least 4 thousand feet up. I don't recal ATVs in the Angeles due to the steep terrain and there is the San Gabrial Wilderness which doesn't allow ATVs. I hope to avoid ATVS if possible. I will get a taste of warm weather bow hunting when I hunt a private WU ranch on Hwy 126 in Fresno County near SLO County. Thanks for the scent tips. By Oct 24th I would think the Mulies will not be velvet of course they will in July which is good because they will stay out of the scrub oak thickets. I will scout the Angeles in Sept when its not so hot and crowded. I don't have a groud blind but its not a bad idea since it would provide shade. I'l let you know how this weeks hunt go's one bonus is that the ranch does have hogs on it there were fresh signs in April. The problem with hogs is that unless there is grainfields the piggies are transient. I am more comfortable at 30 yards then 60 but that is a goal to shoot for.
