Hello all, new here so go easy! I am wanting to take my young boy Mule Deer hunting here in california and am trying to figure out which zone to put in for. I figured maybe some of you fellas have hunted muleys here before and could shed some light. Thanks in advance.
The X zones are the best muledeer zones with X5b, X5a, and X5c being the top areas . That naturally is a pretty heavily applied for areas. X zones always fill . there is also some good hunting in the D zones and sometimes you can purchase tags over the counter . Some of it is pretty rough country , you might want to scout it before applying just so you know what your facing . Mike
One possiability is to rent some mules or lamas and go the federal wilderness areas in the high Sierra.Mortor vehicles are not allowed and in the summer depending on the zone there would be archery hunting for mulies in the morning and evening and flyfishing for trout in the high county lakes in the day time. This way it won't be so crowded and less dangerous since you would hunt during archery season. i know rifle season can get a bit crowded on puplic land. Try the draw to hunt Camp Roberts on the centeral coast on opening day then you can hunt for mulies and pigs at the same time. Canp Roberts is a cal natl Guard base on the 101 north of santa Barbra and has its own web site. A 12 year old boy should be able to handle a small compound bow a 45lp draw should suffice.
When discusing Cal deer hunting keep in mind that per DFG we only have 600 thousand deer while Wisconsin harvests that many deer year after year. I don't know if you got traks magazine available from any establishment that sell hunting licences. They have applications for deer tags including special youth hunts. The dead line is June 2nd for your app to be recieved but there is always next year . You can get traks mag subcription for free. 40 years ago we had 1.5 to 2 million deer but of course we lost a lot of good land to developers. many hunters belong to Wilderness Unlimited plus there is a rival orginization that leases private farm and ranch land for all kinds of hunting. Still its not going to be easy . I am a WU member and I was bear hunting a ranch during deer season (bear and deer season is usually concurent) and I didn't see one deer but did see a big bear who was to far away. I spoke to one hunter who in 6 years took 3 deer from that ranch. Much of the ranch lands are very steep and brushy but there are usually roads nearby. A 4 weel drive is definatly recomended. WU has some archery only ranchs has well. I was on one two months ago in Santa Barbra County and saw a big pig and a big buck. The pig got away and it wasn't yet A-Zone deer season. many of the WU ranchs have concurent hunting for pigs or bear keeping in mind for the most part pigs and bears don't live together but deer do. Page 50 of Traks mag has the stats on deer harvested in all of the cal deer zones. Good Luck; Leonard
Well we drew X1. Don't know where to hunt in this zone, but we'll give it our all. I hunted this zone about 20 years ago, we hunted around macdoel. Back then it was 3 point or better and that zone used to encompass what is now C1 also. Maybe ya all could point us in the right direction. Thanks in advance!
Congradulations on drawing an x-zone. CFG should have a downloadble map of the zone. Contact the local CFG wardens and the ranger of the Nat'l forest that is included in X-1. There may be private ranchs in that zone the CFG warden most likely knows where they are. Some ranch owners might let you hunt their land if you pay them or are willing to do chores. The ranchers may be more amenable to bowhunters then rifle hunters thats a point you might want to bring up. Good Luck; Leonard
