I'm sure if you search the web you can find a tech support site that will explain how to replace it. As for the What do I replace it with, I'd go with a comprable drive - if it was a 40x CD drive get on that is of camparable speed. If she wants more then like a writer (CD-R or CD-RW or maybe a DVD) (R=Writer or RW=Re-writeable) then just make sure the system has the capibility to handle the drive. Check the size of the Harddrive, The amount of RAM and the CPU speed.
As for how, the housing is held in with 2 or 4 screws and there are 2 or 3 plugs to exchange and that is all. The system should detect the change after you get it together and either have the driver needed or ask you for the disk that will come with the replacement drive.
Hope this helps

You can also buy an external cd rom drive or a cd-w(rw) drive. These are very easy to install. You basically set it up close and using a USB cable (comes with them) plug it into the USB port on the computer and you'll get the Found new hardware wizard. Nothing to it.
If you computer was bought new, you can look in the book and see what speed the CPU is. They should tell all the vital information about your computer in your manuals.

My computer was custom built by a guy that was into computers.
Anywho, just looked through all the litature he gave us. Got the bill out. Found nothing about a CPU (althought I know know that I have a AMD-K6 2 350 processor, and that my computer was more expensive than I thought!).
I'm downloading a free version of the Sandra software from download.com. I'll see what that tells me.
